This classic colonial house is set in a beautiful suburban neighborhood. Hoping to improve their family hang-out space and strengthen the connection to the kitchen as well as an outdoor patio. We utilized the footprint of the existing screen porch and pushed the south wall of the kitchen and family room to align with it. Adding only a few feet opened the space creating an easy flow from the kitchen to the family room. Custom Built-ins, trim details, and varied ceiling treatments kept the scale in proportion to the existing architecture of the house. It also prevents the room from appearing as one elongated room and maintains a two-room personality. In the kitchen, tucked into a window-wrapped corner sits a built-in banquet and dining table offering an opportunity to introduce softer materials adding warmth to the overall space. Directly off of the kitchen is the patio captured inside stone walls and includes generous seating areas as well as a stone fireplace.
