Family Friendly Addition Wayland, MA · Addition & Renovation
A colonial-style house inherited from one generation to the next — loved, but quietly working against the family living in it. The laundry was in the wrong place, the screen porch was underutilized, the flow between kitchen and living spaces was interrupted, and there was no real landing spot for a family coming through the door.
The screen porch became the expansion zone for a tight, outdated kitchen. Absorbed into the plan, it created room for an eating area alongside the island, better connection to the living and dining rooms, and a pantry that finally made the kitchen function. A basement was poured below for a future wine cellar. Only two additional feet of additional width were needed to make the layout work; a cantilever solved it without a full foundation.
The mudroom landed in what had been the laundry room. The laundry moved upstairs, tucked into the eave space created by the roofline's flare — out of sight, in the right place, earning every square foot.
A wet bar anchors the living room. The house now fits the family it shelters.
